Leach had never lived in Canehill, but his family roots run deep into the hills. He holds fond memories of visiting his grandparents there every year and his parents chose to retire there. The importance of the college was impressed on him at a young age and after a career in the Texas Permian Basin in oil and gas, he had the means and desire to take on its preservation.
Along with forming the nonprofit steering organization’ s board, he involved historical scholars, architects, a qualified construction / restoration team and other expert consultants, along with enthusiastic locals. The result is akin to Colonial Williamsburg or Arkansas Historic Washington State Park in a scope that takes in 150 acres and nine restored
or stabilized structures.
Visitors can see the fully restored 1887 main college building, the Methodist Manse( circa 1850s), the 1900 A. R. Carroll building and the 1940s Shaker Yates Grocery, which houses the Cane Hill Museum, among others.
In total, 17 structures in the tiny town, homes and commercial buildings, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many are open for view.
Four marked trails run through the 150 acres owned by Historic Cane Hill. The 1.2-mile Heritage Trail rises to Cane Hill Cemetery. The Welch Trail is a quarter of a mile along a creek and the ruins of a former home. The Earle Trail features limestone rock faces and the mile-long McCullough Trail climbs steeply to a rewarding overlook.
